La Manga - South
La Manga Club is an exclusive tourist, sports and leisure resort with three world-famous 18-hole golf courses, a Racquet Club with 28 tennis courts, 7 new paddle tennis courts, a gym, and 8 soccer fields. The southern course is considered one of the best courses in Spain. Designed by Robert Dean Putman in 1971, redesigned in 2005 by Arnold Palmer.
The South Course has been the site of many major professional tournaments, including several Spanish Opens, PGA Championships, for both men and women. The nearly 6,500 meters from the white tee features water hazards on 15 of its 18 holes, wide fairways and a combination of short and long holes. When we played it, not many blades of grass were wrong. Exceptional finish. The front nine is particularly challenging with two par 3s over 200 meters and some rather messy par 4s, requiring careful navigation between lakes and bunkers. The final nine, although shorter, has a number of exciting dogleg holes.
When we entered the clubhouse, we were greeted by the great Severiano Ballesteros - it was a powerful moment. The entire wall was adorned with the Spaniard's victory gesture. One of golf's biggest.
